Steve is one of the most popular characters in the game, having made the transition from being 1996 Embassy champion to one of the PDC's top players. The World Masters winner in 1993, Steve has also enjoyed success in the Opens in Holland, Sweden, Denmark and Belgium during his career. A semi-finalist at both the Budweiser UK Open and Sky Bet World Grand Prix in 2004, he remains among the top competitors on the circuit on his day. That was shown once again when he reached the last eight of the 2005 World Grand Prix, and Steve remains determined to add more major titles to his mantelpiece.
Steve made his world championship debut losing to Chris Johns in the first round, then in 1993 he defeated former world champions Dennis Priestley and Bob Anderson before losing in the semi final to Alan Warriner, the same year Steve turned professional and went on to win the Winmau world masters beating Les Wallace in the final. In 1996 Steve became the BDO World Champion defeating Co Stompe, John Part, Martin Adams, Andy Fordham and then Richie Burnett in the final, then the following year narrowly missed out when he was defeated in the semi final by Marshall James.
Steve has many titles to his name including The Dutch, Belgian and Swedish Opens, in October 2009 Steve won the players championship in Nuland and finished runner up in the European championships defeating the likes of Adrian Lewis, Mark Walsh and James Wade on route to the final where he was defeated by Phil Taylor, however this gave Steve a place in the grand slam of darts where he beat Co Stompe and Kevin McDine before eventually losing to The Wizard Simon Whitlock. Steve is now currently in the elite top 32 players in the world and is looking forward to this years pro tour.
Steve was married in 1993 to Nanette. |
